Leavers Leaving
Some blog articles will share stories of people pursuing a passion and purpose, often in conjunction with radical lifestyle transformations to support the change.
They have a calling and are on their way to making it a reality.
They are on a Quest.
We anticipate some of these Guests on Quests will have achieved FIRE and/or are successfully pursuing a FIRE strategy (e.g., it might be Barista FIRE, Coast FIRE, Lean FIRE, Fat FIRE, Post FIRE … all the FIREs…). they pursue FIRE so they gain the freedom to devote more time to the Quest.
In some cases, they will not have achieved financial independence Before pursuing their Quest. They jumped, feet first, into “the abyss,” as a professor I once had called it. However, the idea of FIRE might be of interest to them now so that they can stay fully committed to the Quest.
Guests will be in various stages of achieving a Certain level of Financial, Time, and/or Psychological Freedom before making radical shifts to their lifestyle…but they are driven, making thoughtful changes, and taking action towards vigorously pursuing their Quest.
Guests will be individuals who are:
Pursuing an Adventurous Quest
Making radical shifts to some or all of their life situations (e.g., leaving a career they have been in for several years, etc.) to go on the Quest
Working towards living a life of greater authenticity and self-actualization
Open to sharing what they have learned and inspirinG others by their example
Guest Interviews
In (John’s) PhD research, I studied the personal myths, values, and self-authenticity of a group of high-performing executives. These individuals all had a “vocational calling” to pursue a Quest in their field of employment and choice of career.
My core research questions explored how personal myths and values relate to pursuing a person’s vocational calling.
Therefore, I plan to apply a similar research approach when meeting with Guests on Quests. However, it will be a much less formal method and a more conversational interview format.
The purpose of these interviews and articles will be to share their stories so that you can benefit from the insights they have gained in what has brought them success and how they have overcome setbacks as they pursue their Quest.
Each month, I hope to interview a Guest on a Quest to hear and document their life story.
In those interviews, I plan to ask these types of questions:
What is your Quest, and why is it vital for you to pursue it?
Tell me about your life story before deciding to pursue your current Quest
How would you describe your core values? How does pursuing your Quest align with your values?
What personal myths do you hold (or perhaps have a hold on you), and how would you describe these mythic narratives? (Don’t worry; if you meet with me at some point, I will have prompts and suggestions to help you identify and describe your myths).
What is the desired future state, short and long-term, you hope to bring about by pursuing the Quest?
What are some highlights you’ve experienced since pursuing your Quest? Perhaps moments of great creativity, felt authenticity, and/or moments of excitement and Fulfillment?
What challenges have you faced (or are currently facing) in pursuing your Quest? What have you learned moving through the obstacles?
After several of these interviews have been posted, I anticipate trends and common factors will emerge across the life stories of these individuals. Identifying these will provide even more ideas, insights, and inspiration for pursuing your version of a Quest.
